2008 has been extremely busy, but so very productive. At the end of the year, I have been fortunate to take some time for a much needed vacation. It has been nearly 8 years since I have been able to do so. I am rested and ready to tackle 2009 with many new and exciting programs.

In August of 2008, we were directly responsible for the rescue and rehabilitation of several starving horses. We took two, Pepper and Jacks, and others went to other homes. Both of our horses have been forfeited to the Lighthouse Farm Sanctuary where they have started their long road to recovery. Jacks is back to his regal beauty and Pepper (who was in the worst condition) is coming along nicely.

We are so glad to have you on our team to prevent animal abuse and neglect. We look forward to working even harder in the new year!

Meet Suzi

When Suzi's caretaker unexpectedly past away, no one knew how to care for this sweet little mule. Her past had been a painful as she had gotten out of her enclosure and had been hit by a car. You will notice the large knob on her left from knee (see pic above). She is a little shy, but each day she shows a little more confidence and a little more trust. We hope she will soon find a sponsor (forms are on the website: www.lighthousefarmsanctuary.org) and/or someone to come visit with her every now and again.

Finally, it seem like we might get a spring...though it's officially summer. The veggie garden in is; most of the flower beds are in; and so are the potted plants on the deck, but the raspberries still need some attention and some other areas too!. As we had to wait for spring/summer, I guess they'll just have to be patient too!

Chevy was listed on Craig's List as "free for slaughter". With the physical and financial help of several people, Chevy now lives at the sanctuary. This picture was taken after his annual hair cut...shearing! He is a real sweetie...love people and my dog, Booker.

After a very wet winter and spring, I never thought I would see our horses looking like this again. Gunner, in front, Grace, behind, are all slicked up in their summer coat in the late afternoon sun. I just love the dappling in Gunner's dark bay coat.

I hope you are not expecting the photos to follow any specific calendar. This photo was taken last fall along the Santiam River near Fisherman's Bend Park near Gates, Oregon. The leaves from the maples blanketed the roads into the park and the water ran clear. Nice afternoon to let loose of all that ails you.

Is spring/summer finally here? Well, it is today. The sun is out and the roosters have been crowing for the last couple of hours. Maybe they are feeling the melatonin racing through their systems...maybe they are just happy. All I know, it has taken too long in coming.

Crystal has been with the Sanctuary for many, many years. She was a left over victim of a Meth Lab bust...she was left behind. She has always been a gentle and sweet little white doe. I guess there are others who suffer from meth addiction...the forgotten.

It has been awhile since I have posted anything. I blame myself and blame the ongoing bad weather, long winter and the toll it has taken on me. I have never quit loving and caring for the animals at the sanctuary, but I have found that I haven't done a very good job taking care of me...so, now I am. I am changing the focus of this blog...or maybe I should say, I am adding to it. I will be adding photos of other things I enjoy about OREGON; places I have gone...sometimes only a few miles from the Sanctuary. I hope you enjoy.

On the morning of January 27, 2008, I awoke to a light dusting of snow. As the morning continued, so did the snow. It was beautiful and peaceful as I did morning chores, but once the chores were done, I took the time to take some pictures. Snow like this a rare event in the Willamette Valley, but one that should be enjoyed.

Oh yes you can! See what a little determination can do!!! When Luke was given a bale of straw that was going to be spread in his house, he sized up the 150 lb bale and work his short chubby little legs until...he was king! Soon after, the straw was spread out in his bed and he took a nap. It is hard being king.

Who's bright idea was this anyway?

Yesterday afternoon,December 6, 2007, the gravel was delivered...well sort of. When the driver arrived, he asked where we going to use it. When I explained about the alley, the shelters and gates, he volunteered to "back" spread it, therefore creating a road to back up on. HIS decision! The first load went just fine. The second load went fine. The third load...welll, see for yourself. The fourth load...well, its just in large pile that the goats love standing on.

After calling in a large tow truck from Albany...we got him out of the alley and on his way. The gravel vender, Knife River, even sent another guy,"Fred", to help. Fred liked our place so much and was so apologetic about getting stuck, causing ruts, making a muddy mess out on the road from the mud and gravel getting in between the dual tires, that he called his Manager and they are donating another load...no charge! NO, we will not have it dumped in the alley.

And besides, as you can tell in one of the pics, I think Bart, the Donkey, liked the excitement...or maybe he just wanted to go for a ride on the tow truck.

So, now you cannot walk down the alley as the third load had to be dumped...but do you think a large pile a gravel would keep Ben and Firefly from raiding the feed cart...NO! Ben, the lame horse...turned into a mountain goat and Firely followed. Not worry about getting feed down to the llamas, Grace and Gunner. I just put the hay/grain into the tractor and drove around...actually, it was easier to feed that way.

While I (we) were waiting for the tow truck, I almost finished Luke's new shelter...just needs a "tin" roof...once again, not too worry, he still has shelter.

It was a long and exhausting day...you just never know what the day will bring while living on the farm.

One of the best things we get to do or see is our rescued animals heal, grow and thrive. In March 2006, Luke was found wandering the streets of NW Portland. He was estimated to be only about 2 weeks old. After months of being bottle fed; going for walks with Booker, my Border Collie X Lab; and getting into trouble; he is now about 400 lbs and still gets into everything. He will still go for walks, but now if he detours, it harder to get him back on track. You try getting 400 lbs of anything going in the same direction when you want. Anyway, he is doing well and thriving.

There are threats of a big storm coming this way. Supposed to bring lots of wind and rain...which will ultimately add to the already growing amount of mud. I know this is just part of living in the Willamette Valley, but it brings about the continual concern for the animals at the Sanctuary that live outside and at times in the mud. They have their shelters, but it seems like there is always something else we should and want to do.
